Draping a Saree: A Timeless Guide

The saree is one of the most elegant garments in the world — and one of the most forgiving, once you understand its rhythm. Whether it is your first drape or your hundredth, a few small habits make the difference between good and effortless.

What you'll need

A saree, a well-fitted blouse, a matching petticoat, and a handful of safety pins. A firm petticoat is the quiet foundation of every clean drape — never skip it.

The classic Nivi drape

Tuck one end of the saree into the petticoat at the navel and wrap it once around the waist. Make five to seven even pleats, gather them neatly, and tuck them in at the centre. Take the remaining fabric around your body once more and bring the pallu over your left shoulder. Pin the pleats at the waist and the pallu at the shoulder so both stay crisp through the evening.

The finishing touches

Even pleats and a pallu pinned at the right length separate a good drape from a great one. Steam the saree beforehand to release creases, keep your jewellery within one metal family, and let the weave — not the accessories — be the story.
